State Groups Are Making Our Communities Safer
Despite paralysis in Washington, DC, state groups have been working hard to make our communities safer—and racking up impressive successes. Since the tragedy in Newtown, 15 states have strengthened their gun laws and almost 50 percent of Americans are now leading safer lives.
Women in Minnesota, Washington and Wisconsin will be safer, thanks to recently passed laws to keep guns out of the hands of domestic abusers. Children are safer thanks to teen nonviolence programs like ReAction in New York and Student Voices in Chicago. And families are safer thanks to programs in California, New Mexico, North Carolina, Washington and Oregon that help parents and caregivers talk with their friends, neighbors, and family about guns and safe gun storage.
